I’m absolutely a new kid on the block when it come to the old C-Fit. Every day I learn something new and push body further then I ever imagined it would go. Jye has asked me to contribute to this blog and write about my journey to the NSW/ACT Sectional Qualifiers on Feb 21 – 22 2010. I am by no means the athlete that my firebreather co-writer Kam is and don’t have the technical background that Jye and Cameron do, so I’m just aiming to keep you entertained and provide an insight into the type of training I’m undertaking and advice I’m receiving. I apologise in advance for any rants that find their way onto this forum ;p
After a lot of contemplation and debate with my esteemed co-writers, I have hardened up and entered the sectionals. I’m still undecided if I’ll compete – there are a few skills I want to nail before I throw myself into that arena – but I’m sure as hell going to give my best to my training and do everything I can to get myself to the startline.
A bit of background – I am a former national representative athlete who after a few years in the partying and fulltime work wilderness stumbled across CrossFit thanks to an ex-boyfriend. I first started to taste CrossFit at random intervals between February and April 2009 before getting quite sick and needing a lay off. I then picked up with a – don’t hate me for this next comment – Fitness First personal trainer who started using the CrossFit method of training on me. I was finding that intensity wise I was able to handle this and starting to see some real results in terms of my body shape.
As I developed a relationship with trainers at Fitness First, one other girl and I decided we should try our luck at the CrossFit Norwest Invitational in early July. We were pretty relaxed about the event (think partying in the cross until 3am the morning of!), but we fronted up and did quite well. I placed third in the women’s division, so thought I should probably look into the competitive side of CrossFit a bit more.
The aforementioned girl – Kate – and I decided we would start training more regularly at Norwest and start turning up at other competitions. At the time we started doing this I was in very average shape – I couldn’t OHS squat anything more than a broomstick, had no concept of a ring dip or pull up ( I somehow got through the invitational using the thickest band doing the rounds!), thought a reverse bicep curl was a clean and could thurster just 25kgs.
In a few short weeks things were quickly improving and I could do most movements assisted or scaled. For various reasons around location and timing, I switched to the CFX affiliate in Kogarah. The girls and guys here were something else. They were all unbelievably strong and unbelievably fit. But I put my head down and tail up and thanks to the fantastic help of most of the gym (in particularly – Jye, Cameron, Kameron, Mick, Steve, Antoinette, Simone, Graeme, Mils, George and John) I am slowly starting to make some significant gains.
8 and a bit weeks out from the sectionals I can now do the following:
- occasionally pull out a kipping pull up (my kip is tempremental but im trying to slowly get her to appear at events and training a bit more!)
- ring dip with the weakest band
- OHS 40kgs
- Front Squat 70kgs
- Thruster 4kgs
- Back Squat 80kgs
- Deadlift 100kgs
- Clean and Jerk 40kgs
- Snatch 25kgs
- Push Press 37.5kgs
- Push Jerk 50kgs
- Strict Press 27kgs
I’m also learning to pull out a hand stand push up, muscle up and climb ropes at the moment.
Training 2-3 times a day and will fingers crossed find myself on the start line of the sectionals.
Hopefully my next post will be a bit more interesting for y’all.
Twin Magnum Out.

If I’m competing, you’re competing babe. Take a spoonful of concrete and HTFU.
